Single Tooth Implants Forest Grove, OR

When a tooth is lost to decay, injury, or extraction, the gap it leaves behind is more than cosmetic. The surrounding teeth can shift, the jawbone beneath the empty space begins to deteriorate, and everyday functions like chewing and speaking can be affected. A single tooth dental implant is a permanent solution designed to address all of that—not just the visible gap, but the root-level problem underneath it.

The implant itself is a small titanium post placed directly into the jawbone. Over the course of a few months, it fuses with the surrounding bone through a process called osseointegration, creating a stable foundation. Once that foundation is secure, a custom-made crown is attached on top, restoring the full appearance and function of the missing tooth.

Who Is a Candidate for a Single Tooth Implant?

Most healthy adults who are missing a single tooth are potential candidates.

A few factors that influence whether implants are the right fit include:
•  Adequate jawbone density to support the implant post
•  Healthy gum tissue with no active periodontal disease
•  A fully developed jaw (implants are typically not placed in adolescents)
•  No uncontrolled systemic conditions that affect healing

Bone loss is common after tooth extraction, but it doesn't automatically disqualify someone. Bone grafting can often rebuild the necessary foundation before implant placement. Our implant dentists can evaluate your specific anatomy and medical history to determine whether you're a good candidate and what, if any, preparatory steps are needed.

Single Tooth Implant vs. Dental Bridge: What's the Difference?

A dental bridge has long been a standard option for replacing a single missing tooth, and it works well in many situations. But the two restorations are fundamentally different in how they function and what they require.

A bridge spans the gap by anchoring an artificial tooth to the two natural teeth on either side. Those anchor teeth, called abutments, must be filed down to accommodate crowns, which means permanently altering otherwise healthy tooth structure. The bridge sits on top of the gumline and doesn't interact with the bone below.

A single tooth implant, by contrast, stands entirely on its own. No adjacent teeth are involved. The titanium post replaces the tooth root, which means it continues to stimulate the jawbone and prevent the bone loss that typically follows extraction. The result is a restoration that functions and feels more like a natural tooth.

How Do You Know Which Option Is Right for You?

There's no universal answer, but a few considerations tend to guide the conversation. If the adjacent teeth are already crowned or heavily restored, a bridge may make practical sense since those teeth are already being treated. If the neighboring teeth are healthy and intact, most patients prefer to leave them untouched—which points toward an implant.

Bone volume matters too. If significant bone loss has already occurred and the patient isn't a candidate for grafting, a bridge may be the more realistic option. Timeline is another factor. Implants require several months to complete from placement to final crown; a bridge can typically be placed in a matter of weeks.

Our Forest Grove dentists can walk through both options in the context of your specific case—your bone health, your bite, the condition of neighboring teeth, and what outcome you're hoping for.
